Company Profile:
RAF is a California corporation based in San Ramon, CA. For well over a decade RAF has been pioneering Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) projection technology for big screen television and high definition television (HDTV). While we concentrated on the semiconductor, liquid crystal, and video electronics aspects of this emerging industry during the 1990’s, RAF has focused for the past three years on the extraordinary, challenging optical systems required for successful LCOS projector commercialization.

Founder’s Profile:
Mr. Richard A. Flasck founded RAF Electronics Corp. in 1989. Mr. Flasck is the CEO and controlling shareholder. The primary activity of RAF has been the development of next generation, high definition television (HDTV) projection technology. Recognizing that such projection system designs must be approached from a totally integrated system perspective, Mr. Flasck has been involved in designing and prototyping all major components: microdisplays, color management prisms, condenser and projection lenses, interface electronics, and liquid crystal materials.
In his early career Mr. Flasck worked at Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., of Troy, Michigan, where he developed, managed, and licensed several high tech products including thin film photovoltaics, ablative imaging films, EEPROMs , multi-chip modules, and superconducting materials. In 1982 he relocated to the West Coast to become the founder and CEO of Alphasil, Inc., a Fremont-based company which had the distinction of having the world’s first amorphous silicon, thin film transistor (TFT), active matrix LCD pilot production line. He has also served Alien Technology, Inc., based in Morgan Hill, as COO, managing the development of fluidic self-assembly (FSA) nano-technology, and has been on the Board of Directors of Somanetics, Inc., a Troy, Michigan corporation which specializes in cutting edge diagnostic medical equipment.
Mr. Flasck holds an MS in Physics, has over 25 published papers, and over 25 issued patents. Three fundamental US patents and several foreign patents covering LCOS projectors have been granted to Mr. Flasck and assigned to RAF.

Products and Services:

For several years RAF has provided consulting services and has licensed its technology for LCOS projection systems. These activities continue to be major programs within the company. Parties interested in obtaining technology licenses and LCOS component and/or system design services should contact Dick Flasck at 925-551-5361 or at
rflasck@rafelectronics.comIntegrated LCOS projector optical system design requires precision light management, which in turn requires precision dielectric interference coatings. It became apparent to RAF in 1998 that such coatings were not readily available from outside vendors. So, RAF made a corporate commitment to develop these resources internally, and a new RAF product line was born: custom dielectric interference filter components.

We specialize in solving the tough problems – quickly and cost effectively. In fact, we enjoy coercing photons into doing things they naturally resist. We can’t violate the laws of physics, but we’ll go to the wall for you to make your program successful.
What services do we offer?
Design
- from functional spec development to detailed stack design and testingPrototyping – from "one offs" and first articles to short qualification runs
Production – from pilot runs through high volume production
What types of coatings do we offer?
